![]() There are all kinds of tradeoffs like that. But for Lightroom to track that stuff it would have to implement constant folder watching, which you already said you don't want, and they also didn't do it because it would slow down the program even more. For example, once you import into Lightroom you have to be careful what you do to the images on the desktop because if you move them Lightroom will no longer find them in the last place it saw them. If you want simple, that limits the power of the programs. If you want great photo management, you need a lot of smarts in the program, which try to use the power in today's computers. Because Lightroom keeps its own database, creates huge preview caches, has its own performance issues that drive people nuts, etc. But based on what you wrote about iPhoto, Picasa, etc. You can also hit the Save button at the top of the search so that the criteria become an auto-updating Saved Search, which is about as good as a "Smart Collection" in a program like Lightroom.Īfter what I wrote above, I still prefer Lightroom over the Finder for working with photos. Great answer, not a lot of people know about that. Is there another software that searches huge number of files for EXIF data? Is LR the answer I am looking for? Is it able to handle huge libraries? Should I just start building out my library properly in LR? I have also tried Picasa and I don't like the folder watching it does and small hidden files it creates all over the hard drive. They choke on some files and cause hangs and a lot of problems. They just keep spinning, processing the photos, doing facial recognition and stuff that I don't want (I use them in reference mode as I don't want to make duplicates of all my photos). They do this but can't handle many photos. Is there a software on mac that is good for searching all the photos taken with a camera model or certain ISO or taken by a certain lens? In fact, from time to time, I delete the LR library (I keep all my edits as XMP files) to keep things simple and fast. I don't use any library features of LR so my LR library does not contain all my 14 years' worth of photos. I just import raw files, edit, and export jpegs from LR. For post processing I use Lightroom but I don't keep all my photos in LR library. ![]() I am used to managing my photos in folders myself and use a file browser (Lyn) to browse the folders and thumbnails etc. ![]()
